What is 3D printing?
3D printing allows real objects to be printed from a computer. This technology is already used in many industries and is predicted to become the next “must have” household technology item.
How does it work?
A 3D image is created using software. Next, the special file is sent to the printer. 3D printing is characterized as “additive” manufacturing, which means that a solid, three-dimensional object is constructed by adding material in layers. The printer lays down layers of liquid, powder, paper, or metal materials to build a model.
How is it used?
There are many practical and scientific ways to use 3D printing. 3D printers can be used to make anything from a simple toy car or a hamburger, to a complex model of the brain students can use to practice surgical skills. Researchers are currently working on creating human organs to be used in transplant patients in the near future. Halliburton and General Electric are using 3d printers to produce manufacturing parts.
Why is this an important 21st Century skill?
Whether your child may wish to be an entrepreneur, a fashion designer, or a surgeon, this technology is already making an impact in various professions. The possibility for innovation using this technology is limitless!
